A little-known iPhone feature allowing users to schedule text messages has been hailed as a game-changer, with many calling it one of the most underrated tools in Apple’s arsenal. Dubbed ‘Send Later’, the feature enables users to compose a message and choose a specific time for it to be delivered — perfect for avoiding late-night disruptions or ensuring timely reminders.
The tool, introduced with the iOS 18 update in September, has gained popularity among iPhone users, especially on Reddit, where one post praising the function received hundreds of upvotes. Users shared how they use it to send messages to friends and family at more appropriate times, with some even joking about using it posthumously to remain a “nagging presence” from beyond the grave.
One user explained they use it to remind their ex-husband to give their child medicine or pack school supplies, while another said they schedule messages for their spouse during the night to be delivered in the evening, often causing confusion.
To use the feature, users must have iOS 18 installed. Once updated, they can access the Messages app, tap the plus (+) icon, and select ‘Send Later’. From there, they can choose a delivery time up to 14 days in advance. A dashed border appears around the message field, and a timestamp confirms the scheduled time. The message will be sent even if the device is offline at the time of delivery, though an internet connection is required when scheduling.
Users can edit or delete scheduled messages by holding the message and selecting the appropriate option. The feature is compatible with all iPhone models that support iOS 18, including iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd gen), XR, XS, 11 through 16 series, and the new iPhone 16e.
Apple describes the feature as a way to be “less annoying”, offering a subtle but effective way to manage communications without disturbing recipients at inconvenient times.
